The Maths behind Clifton Suspension Bridge

An excellent lesson was delivered by Clifton Suspension Bridge to Year 9, with explanations of how forces are applied to the bridge structure and how the load is transferred to the two vertical towers.

Students were able to construct ‘bridges’ and apply weights to their bridges – demonstrating how the load shifted from one support to another as the weight transferred across the bridge. The principle of transferring the load to the strongest parts of the bridge and how the load was directed to take advantage of the vertical strength of the towers proved very interesting

9wxMa3 thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and Sameer, Soraya and Josh proved adept at bridge construction!
