Explore Learning

Explore Learning ran two workshops for some of our lower ability Key Stage 3 students as part of this year’s Maths Week.

Year 8s were given the opportunity to develop their knowledge of fractions and decimals in a fun, dynamic context and apply that to every growing teenager’s constant thought: food. They got to put themselves into a restaurateur’s shoes and take pizza and soup orders from their friends, and followed the process right through to how much of each ingredient was needed.

Year 9s looked into 3D shapes and nets and used this to begin problem solving in thinking of different solutions to create a net for a cube. By the end of the session students got to try their nets out and build their 3D shapes, some discovering that there were several solutions to this problem. They also realised that the practicalities of building 3D shapes came with other problems to solve, which led them to think further as to where tabs could be placed in order to assemble these together.
