Designing an aircraft interior

During Maths Week, Year 7 students took part in a workshop hosted by Airbus.

Working in teams, they were given the challenge of designing the interior of an aircraft. Using skills covered in previous Maths lessons, each team had to decide how many Business and Economy seats they could fit within their aircraft, while ensuring that they met safety criteria.

They were then able to calculate their income from ticket sales, to find out how much profit their aircraft could generate. This was where a few teams ran into problems and discovered that they would need to go back and amend their plans. For example, a couple of teams were able to generate impressive profits only to find that they had not included room for any toilets!

By the end of the workshop, students had successfully combined a variety of mathematical skills within a real life problem solving context and the winning teams received a well deserved round of applause!
