Ambitions Careers Event (Y9)

For young people, the process of making decisions about the future – what courses to choose and what to aim for in education and employment, has become increasingly complex. To help the students think more effectively about the future and the decisions they will face about education and employment, we attended an AMBITIONS CAREERS EDUCATIONS EVENT which was being held for Year 9 students across the Bristol.

The event took place at SGS College, and the students had access to more than 100 different employers, universities and training providers. The event kicked off with the students listening to an amazing motivational speaker ‘Cameron Parker’, who has been rated as the #1 motivational speaker for schools. Leaving our students inspired to think about their future and wanting to succeed in all that they do, our students had the opportunity to participate in four different interactive workshops with employers.

Wandering around the event as a member of staff, there was so much to take in and absorb. Students were really getting a hands on experience and an insight into so many industry sectors. They were able to demonstrate their creative side during the Hair & Beauty stalls but also the Catering and Hospitality stand, where some yummy looking cupcakes were being decorated.

Students were problem solving to work out how to construct and fit doors in the Construction stand; they had the opportunity to touch and feel some wildlife at the Animal Care stand. The Medical stands were always full, with students testing out the equipment used in hospitals – to the point where students were taking each other’s temperatures by holding a special device that shines a light at your forehead and can read your temperature. This is just to name a few!!!

Miss Thomas comments: “With over 100 employers in one area, what a fantastic opportunity for our young people to potentially meet their future employer. It’s a great opportunity for them to make connections with companies as they will start looking for a work experience placement at the end of Year 9 and hopefully some students will aspire to want to go down the apprenticeship route – what a way to get a foot in the door.”

Miss Thomas would specially like to thank Burges Salmon (our business partnership link) and FIRST Group Buses for providing our transport for the event. Without them the event wouldn’t have happened and the students loved riding in style!

Overall, the Ambitions event was a successful trip. The behaviour of our Year 9 students was impeccable, they did themselves and us proud.
