A curriculum to meet the needs of all –

FHS was congratulated by Ofsted for offering a good academic curriculum with outstanding features. We emphasise the skills of literacy and numeracy and offer a strong foundation in a wide range of subjects. 
We understand that young people learn in a variety of ways and at different paces and our curriculum supports all students to succeed to the best of their ability. Our students are encouraged to unlock their creative potential in all subjects, from sport to science and from computer programming to drama. We challenge them to expand their skills and understanding from their very first day.
As they move through the school, our students are supported and guided towards selecting the most appropriate route of study based upon their aptitude, interest and motivation. 
FHS already has outstanding leadership, outstanding Maths and English teaching and learning, and outstanding spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students; there is lots of work being done to achieve outstanding in all areas.

Our Key Stage 3 course includes two modern foreign languages plus an enrichment course which provides a ‘taster’ of Mandarin, BSL, Latin or Italian. All students study Music, Dance, PE and Drama together with a full range of traditional subjects. At the start of Year 7, most faculties teach students in mixed ability tutor groups.  Once teachers have a clear idea of students’ ability and potential, ability sets are created in the majority of subjects.

In Year 9 some students will start GCSEs courses if this is appropriate for them.  During the Spring term of Year 9, all students choose which option subjects they will study and which pathway they will follow in Year 10.  Advice is given on these important choices during Academic Review day, when students, parents and tutors meet to discuss progress and future choices. At Key Stage 4 we offer a wide range of subjects including GCSE s in Triple Science, History, Psychology, Sociology and Art. We offer vocational partnership courses with local colleges if appropriate for a small number of students. BTEC courses such as Media and Engineering are taught in school alongside GCSEs. All students sit exams in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Citizenship and RE.

At Key Stage 5 our student’s progress to the North Bristol Post 16 Centre based at Redland Green and Cotham schools with whom we have a close partnership. A large number of our students choose to study at other colleges and post-16 centres such as St Mary Redcliffe and Temple.  Our students have an excellent track record of retention and success at A’ level.  This year 5 former students were accepted at Oxford and Cambridge.

Fairfield believes in students developing responsibility as individuals and understanding their place in creating a positive society of tomorrow; with this in mind, at the heart of the community are school prefects, a strong house system and students committed working to improve their local community.
