21st Century School Exchange

19 pupils and five staff from Fairfield High School flew out to Bordeaux for five days in October to meet their counterparts at the Collège George LaPierre to learn about their school system, healthy lifestyles and to discover the historical town of Bordeaux.

The FHS pupils had the opportunity to do a variety of activities such as food tasting, watching an ice hockey match, going to lessons in a French school, visiting the town of Bordeaux and going local primary schools to give presentations about Bristol. This was a return visit after the French pupils came to Bristol last April staying at Goblin Combe Lodge and taking part in similar activities in Bristol. They bought their school ‘chef de cuisine’ with them who learnt how to make Cottage Pie and a ‘roast lunch’. Debbie Nutt who is the head chef at FHS also visited Bordeaux to discover the differences and similarities between a French and British kitchen. Debbie said ‘It was a really interesting to see how things work in a French kitchen. It was a valuable experience’ 

Young people from Bristol and Bordeaux have been making friendships since the exchange began in 1947 and this exchange took place thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Lefevre Trust. Each partner school has received £5,000 to develop cross curricular projects linked to healthy eating.

Neil Humphrey, Head of Modern Languages at FHS said ‘The pupils have leant so much and had a fantastic time. The experience will really encourage them to continue to study languages’
