Maths & Music: a winning combination

As part of maths week, a group of Year 10 students had the opportunity to take part in a Maths and Music workshop run by Miss Aoki. From rhythms to creating music, from writing music to structuring it, students looked at the part that maths has to play in music.

After initially dispelling the idea that maths and music could not be related, students went on to recreate Pythagoras’ initial monochord experiment looking at pitch and ratio. They also looked at this relationship by creating scales from homemade straw-kazoos and differing levels of water in bottles. In amongst the twanking and banging, sloshing and strumming, students discovered that going from one note to another required their mathematical knowledge of fractions and ratios to do so; understanding that even the fundamentals of what they hear is down to carefully calculated relationships of numbers.
