Literacy

Literacy at Fairfield High School

What do we believe?

·        Literacy as a right for all students

·        The responsibility of all the teachers for the development of literacy

·        The development of literacy across all areas of the curriculum

What is our goal?

We aim to provide a supportive, stimulating and secure environment where children are encouraged to express themselves and where their contributions are valued. We will provide for the language development of pupils and will develop their ability to use language to think, to explore and to recognise and communicate their ideas.

How are we achieving this?

At Fairfield High School we currently have a stimulating range of literacy activities embedded in both classroom practice and in our extra- curricular programs. Here are some of the things we have achieved this year:

·        A high ability book club ran at lunchtimes

·        Visits from authors such as Joseph Delaney, Robin Stevens and Cathy Cassidy

·        Accelerated Reader at KS3

·        Key intervention for EAL students at KS4

·        Word of the week

·        Suggested reading lists (Parents Evenings)

·        Spelling program in tutor sessions at KS3

·        Drop everything and read on Fridays

·        Themed Literacy Week

·        Reading and Writing competitions

How is this monitored?

·        Student Voice

·        Surveys

·        Reading and Spelling Data (collated twice a year at KS4 and three times a year at KS3)

·        Learning Walks

·         Book Scrutiny

·        Pupil Pursuit
