Buoyancy of Submarines by Dr Coverdale
Dr Coverdale, former Submariner and Submarine Design Engineer, visited FHS during Science Week to demonstrate the engineering challenges of controlling buoyancy in submarines. Using a number of demonstrations he engaged the Year 9 students in a discussion of life working on board and the dangers posed if they get the design wrong... including the story of the U.S.S. Thresher which lost control of its buoyancy and was crushed like a tin can, killing all on board, as it sank below crush pressure!
