@Bristol: Earth to Mars Rover Programming Workshop

Our Year 9 High Ability cohort were invited to take part in a Robotics Theme day at @Bristol last term.

The workshop was based around past, present and future missions to Mars and the scene was first set inside @Bristol’s amazing 3D Planetarium show, in the UK’s first 3D digital Planetarium. This was followed by an introduction to the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Aurora ExoMars Mission (http://exploration.esa.int/mars/) which launched in March with the aim of landing a remote controlled rover on Mars’ surface for scientific research and exploration.

Students were trained to programme robotic rovers using Python before they were set a series of missions to programme their rovers to explore and map the surface of ‘Mars’. Mr Mears and the workshop facilitators were very impressed by our students programming skills and the enthusiasm they exhibited throughout the day.
